Using those types of mundane items and trinkets are always fun to tie into a character's identity.Well, not every game would involve or help in character generation in a game. He carved their "names" into the haft, so he would know which enemies had proved most helpful (hardly ever the creature's actual name, typically just a brief description of the creature in tribal draconic, like "whip cat" instead of displacer beast). The Lizardfolk have a racial feature that allows them to craft certain weapons and shields out of bones of fallen enemies, and he had a sling of javelins he kept stocked with bones from worthy foes. For example, a grapple-focused Lizardfolk Barbarian I played in a one-shot wore a giant constrictor snakeskin belt (trophy: crafted from the only creature he failed to kill with just his teeth and claws, wears it in honor of the challenge it provided him) and a necklace of alligator teeth (tribal totem: for being a totem barbarian, reflavored the Wolf Totem aspects as alligator to fit the character). I always find those fun to incorporate into the character's aesthetic in some way. I think my favorites are the monster/animal trophies. I think that's why a lot of the Backgrounds also include some odds 'n ends in their starting "treasure", with things like a trophy from an animal/monster, or a map of a far off region, etc. I agree that trinkets are a lot of fun for random flavor and inspiration.

Her mother compiled supplies and tools from her own shop and around the home into a portable sewing kit for her daughter, as a birthday gift, and so it became the Weaver's Tools. Her mother is a tailor by profession, and when my char was a child they'd while away afternoons sewing together. Her dad dubbed the disguise kit the "Emergency Acting Bag," and gave it to her to celebrate her first big acting gig. She has both a Disguise Kit and Weaver's Tools both were received from her father and mother, respectively. One character I have is a traveling actor by profession. Smoking the pipe during moments of downtime is a habit she picked up from him, as well. He's gone now, but she keeps the pipe as a way of holding onto his memory, and the values he taught her. Joining the military was her first route to independence and seeing the world, and the gloves-which she had made by a skilled artisan using her own hard-earned cash-represent that first step she took towards earning her own living.Īnother character has a smoking pipe that used to belong to an important friend of hers, someone who significantly changed her outlook on life. She also has a pair of leather gloves that she bought for herself midway through her career. She's retired now, but keeps her military badge attached to her medical bag for old times' sake. I like to give my characters 1-3 small personal possessions as another step in fleshing out their character.įor example, one of my characters served over a decade as a combat medic.
